Well that was a summer for the books! One solid tour from the middle of June until the end of September, dense with inspiring collaborations, intoxicating audiences, and seemingly impossible itineraries!
An honour to share the stage with Bruce Molsky at Summerfolk before we boarded for our ScandalousNavia tour, a chance encounter with our new pal Basia Bulat at the airport, who just happened to be playing right before at the Malmöfestivalen, and was kind enough snap this ninja shot:
Flew the next day to Helsinki for the Art Goes Kapakka festival, where we were right chuffed to have our friends Esko Järvelä’s Epic Male Band opening for us, and joining forces at the end of the night. A wee video of the show here:
A bunch more shows every day after that, in every kind of venue imaginable. We were joined by Sweden’s most progressive flutist Jonas Simonson at our Gothenburg show, put on by the amazing artist collective at Oceanen.
Once the band finally escaped back to the motherland, I stuck around for a few weeks with my trusty Swedish virtuoso 12-string guitarist Simon Nyberg. We packed out venues at Live at Heart, and in Stockholm, and I was lucky enough to guest in Stockholm with some of Sweden’s jazz greats; Beche’s Brew, have Mats Öberg (who used to play with Frank Zappa!) sit in with us, and finally I got to dig deep into the Swedish fiddle tradition with my absolute favourite Swedish fiddler Mats Edén!
After landing back in Toronto, I had 4 days to compose the music for a new duo show consisting of just myself on fiddle and Steve Foster on drums, which we took out on a quick tour of the maritimes and the Deep Roots festival. This project is unbelievably exciting and I’m sure we’ll be spreading this music far and wide…
Now back in Toronto, we’re getting ready for an October tour of AB, SK, MB, our fall showcases at FMO, Mundial Montreal, CINARS, Alberta Contact and Manitoba Contact. Also, we have some REBONKULOUSLY exciting announcements which we’ll be making soon, involving a tour farther afield then we’ve ever ventured, and a brand spanking new RELEASE!
Undying thanks to the incredible people who made this summers tour possible, both physically, logistically, musically and spiritually. A few people who cannot go unnamed:
Val Denn, Johan Hultvquist, Christian Hurst, Livet Nord, Simon Nyberg, Trent Freeman, Luc De Bouvries, The Canada Council for the Arts, & The Ontario Arts Council
These adventures would have never happened without you!
